Tyler, The Creator and friends

It's been years since I've seen Spark Arena full to capacity.

This is becoming a bit of a habit — attending gigs as a friend’s +1. I’ve never really dedicated much time to keeping up with modern rap music… I know the names, but I’m not exactly across the discographies. Which is to say, I had no idea what to expect from this line-up.

First up was Paris Texas, who I’d seen a couple of years back at the Auckland Laneway Festival. The three of them had the crowd in the palm of their hands, delivering a hard, fast set packed with hits.

A packed arena with a brightly lit center stage featuring three performers: Paris Texas. The surrounding crowd is dense, and overhead lights illuminate the scene dramatically.

Next up was Lil Yachty. All I’ll say is: the man has incredible swag. His outfit was on point — and he knew it.

Finally, it was time for Tyler, The Creator. And he came on with a bang — literally — deploying expertly timed stage pyrotechnics to great effect.

For one guy on a very big stage, he made use of every inch, holding the audience with sheer presence.

All up, a fun night out with music I wouldn’t usually seek out. Thanks for the ticket, Dave.
