Quote by mezzoblue § Image Replacement + Google

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

During the portion of his talk where he discussed image replacement and its impact on findability, he addressed the white elephant question that has likely occurred to most designers who have used image replacement over the past five years or so: what does Google think of CSS image replacement, anyway? But the part that surprised me is that he actually had an answer: Google’s okay with it, you won’t be penalized for using image replacement properly.

A qualified selector can only contain one < . The element immediately to the left of the < is the target of the selector, everything after is the qualifier. In this case, the style would only apply to anchors that contain an image.

I told my friend Don the story, but he said it wasn’t an example of things evening out so much as just a stupid story. That’s interesting, Don, because you saying that evens out what I said to your mother that time.
I have a lot of stories about things evening out, but I think the one about the Nobel Prize-winning bum is the best. I’d say it would take about three of my other stories to even out that one.

My first officemate didn’t know how to set up his computer. He didn’t know anything, it appeared. He’d been hired to work on Dig Dug, and he was completely at sea. I had to teach him a lot, including how to program in assembly, how the Atari hardware worked, how to download stuff, how to debug. It was pretty bad.

I knew Webstock was a hit when it was 2am and I was standing outside a bar yelling at some bright someone about some bright thing and having a ball.
