Firefox Extension of the Month

Monday, June 27th, 2005

Feedview is an extension for Firefox that converts RDF into a more readable format. It uses a simple stylesheet to style the content. You can also provide a custom stylesheet if you so desire.

I know Safari has had this for a while…but who actually uses that browser?

Google Maps almost global…

Saturday, June 25th, 2005

A while ago I did my own version of the google memory map thing as google didn’t have satellite images of the New Zealand at that point it was pretty much only the U S of A.

Google now seems to be expanding their satellite coverage. They’ve managed half of Auckland in focus and the other half not.

Its good to see they will be covering the globe in those little google watermarks even if it does take them a while!

Changes to the inside

Thursday, June 23rd, 2005

Since launching the new look at the beginning of the week I’ve been quietly adding in some features that I’ve wanted for a while. Just ’cause I’m posting about it now doesn’t mean I’m going to stop adding/tweaking…I’m just going to take a little rest and work on other projects that need my attention. Then I’m going to come back here and funk it all up with more. Yes MORE!

So here you have a list (albeit a short one) of the changes so far:

  • Fixed the double posts on the home page. The lead post was being repeated in the list of recent posts under the photos section. Not good. But fixed now thanks to this Wordpress forum post.
  • Added support for Gravatars on the comments section
  • Added Gravatar Signup checkbox to the comment form
  • Added support for Technorati tags. I’m still setting this up as I’m unsure where and what I want to do with them
  • I reskinned the Wordpress admin with the ‘Tiger’ admin theme. You cant see it - but I can and it rules!

Yay for the Auckland WSG Meet!

Thursday, June 23rd, 2005

10 Hardcore geeks braved the shitty weather to drive out to the shore last night to attend the very first meeting of the Auckland Web Standards Group.

I’m pretty sure the staff at Blankenberge Belgian Beer Café were a little scared of us as our conversation ebbed from total silence to almost unbearable nattering (give a few geeks some foreign beer and you cant shut them up!).

Among the 10 people who attended we managed to find 6 people who are keen to play a role in organising future events. Ideas were tossed around about venues and possible topics for presentations.

Here are some of the more popular topics people want to talk or hear about at future WSG meets:

  • Web design for the old school designer/Basics of web standards design
  • The DOM/JavaScript
  • Selling web standards development to clients
  • Improving usability and accessibility

Peter has thrown a page up on his website outlining in further detail what was discussed last night. It’s interesting to note the broad range of topics that may (or may not) fall under the Web Standards brolly.

Overall I’d say last night was a total success. It’s always awesome to meet new people who share the same views about the web as I do.

Go web standards!
