Jesus Saves

Thursday, March 31st, 2005

Here we have the full selection of 12 inch Jesus Sport Statues.

I personally like the baseball one…there’s something sensual about Jesus holding a child AND a big wooden baseball bat.

Joshua Schachter, the dude who wrote del.icio.us has decided to quite his day job and take del.icio.us on as his full time gig! He’s decided to get some outside investment so he can get some much-needed infrastructure.

Yahoo actually does acquire Flickr

Monday, March 21st, 2005

Flickr has finally been acquired by Yahoo! as explaned in this blog entry on the flickr blog.

I’m still unsure what to think. I know Yahoo! does some good shit for the interweb, but on the other hand…they are the Man.

A small note to the flickr people: DONT LET IT DIE!

This article at Microsoft Watch explains it in more details.

…and you’ll know us by the trail of the dead

Wednesday, March 16th, 2005

In the past few months I’ve been buying/downloading/listening to a lot of music. Most of it has been New Zealand music - which is as good as anything else - however, I’ve been listening to some international stars, too.

I can only be arsed to write about two of the newest CDs I’ve purchased…so without any more key-tapping here we go.

…And you will know us by the trail of the dead - Worlds Apart

I discovered this band years ago - about the same time I discovered At The Drive-in. Since then, At The Drive-in turned into Mars Volta (their new album is totally mind-blowing) and I finally purchased a TOD CD: Worlds Apart.

In a word: WOW!

These guys are really fucken good! This album is a bit of change from their previous work, which is very loud and very noisy - ala Pixies. Worlds Apart is a plunge into a prog-rock/epic-orchestral world that is seeded with unexpected breaks and symphonic interjections.

I recommend this album to anyone. No matter what sound you’re into at the moment this album will most definitely meet your business needs!

Butch Cassidy Sound System - Butches Brew

And on the other end of the scale we have this wonderful album.

Butch Cassidy Sound System is a 26-year-old musician, writer and producer called Michael Hunter. This dude put a lot of time and effort into getting this album to sound as if it was made in the early 70s. In my opinion he got it spot on!

Butches Brew sounds as authentic as any of those 70s reggae or soul albums you used to be able to find in op shops before the Kingsland hipsters bought them all. Michael Hunter plays all the instruments on most of the tracks. Not only that, but he also mastered the album from two inch tape, to achieve the authentic organic sound often missing from other dub soundsystems.

Don’t expect just reggae, however. This album covers most of the arse-shaking genres from rare hip-hop and r’n'b grooves to funk and modern day house music.

Another highly recommended album - especially for you Kiwis who are often up for some skankin’ reggae!

gmail launched?

Friday, March 11th, 2005

Mastthew Haughey shows us screen shot of the Google homepage. Not only that but Gmail themselves mention it in their Whats New section.

But thats not all…they’re saying that Gmail will work in “almost any computer running almost any web browser, even old ones”.

Sweet as!

where have all the flowers gone

Work has been overwhelmingly busy of late. I hardly have the energy to cook dinner or drink beer - okay, okay - I always have energy to drink beer, but cooking dinner is another story.

At the office I’ve been pushing out tableless, compliant sites like they’re going out of fashion!

  • LISA’s Hummus
Designed by a third party. Cut ‘n’ coded by yours truly. Not only is it tableless, but the product is YUMMY!
  • Heliocare
Designed by the same third party as the Lisa’s site. Cut ‘n’ coded by yours truly. A simple two column layout that degrades like a 1990’s HTML 1 page
  • Marketing New Zealand
Designed and redesigned in-house. Quite a bit of the CSS and markup done by yours truly. This project was quite a challenge as not only is it being driven by our handrolled CMS, it also has to look identical in most browsers.
  • There is one more I’m currently working on - it’s going live on Monday so I’ll let you know more about it when it’s released to the web.

As for home stuff, there has been a lot of computer activity. Both Manda and I decided to move back to Windows (I know, I know).

I need Windows as I’m getting more Photoshop work that The GIMP isn’t quite handling. I still love The GIMP and have it installed alongside Photoshop. It’s quite weird being back on the Devil’s OS. I have a G5 at work, and I was running Debian on my laptop for about a year so moving back is a major leap in the wrong direction. Nevermind - its just an operating system…right?
